Lesson 14 Assignment 1

Lesson 14 Assignment 1

Q What is it: A resume specifically tailored to the job ad you posted in the discussion board Purpose: The purpose of the resume is to present your credentials and argument for being a person qualified and interested in the position so that you make it to the interview. Goals: Persuasive/Informative • To build a positive image of your qualifications • To show you have researched the company and analyzed the job ad extensively based on the information from in-class lecture, examples, and activities • To convince the hiring manager/HR person/computer that you should be met with for an interview • For this submission, you will submit your final resume after incorporating feedback from your peers Assignment Instructions Tasks: Your resume should engage the following: • You are to respond to the job listing you posted on the discussion board and create a resume for the position. • You should not create a "form" resume. You need to understand how to compose the resume to highlight the experience, education, and qualifications that directly respond to the needs of the company. • A good/great resume showcases your experience, education, training, and skills in an easy-to-read format that can be readily scanned/skimmed in under thirty seconds. Most hiring managers do not “read” resumes, they quickly scan them and are drawn to specific information on the resume. It is your task to make the most interesting and pertinent information about yourself easy to locate. Format: Resumes have a specific format. You can review this week’s video and the material in chapter 11 of the textbook for ideas of how to format the resume and its contents. You should NOT use a template from Word or available online. These are often thrown into the trash without being read by hiring managers. However, you should match the font and stylistic choices of your resume to your cover letter. Length: The resume should be 1-2 pages in length. This is always advisable, but as you gain more time and experience in your field, the resume may surpass this length (but should rarely do this – remove extraneous information instead). For this assignment, stick to a max of two pages. Remember: Much like you matched a brand for the company when you wrote the negative response letter, your resume cements a personal brand that is an introduction to who you are for employers. Consider how your tone, word choice, mechanics, and other rhetorical moves present you.
